Final Assessment: Research for Article Publication
Students are required to adapt their dissertation into a concise academic paper suitable for publication in The Design School’s KREATE Journal. The paper must follow the journal’s official submission requirements and Manuscript Preparation Guide.
Students must:
- Review the KREATE Journal guidelines on its official website.
- Download and use the provided KREATE Raw Input template.
- Follow the required font, structure and formatting.
- Avoid changing the template’s predetermined format.
- Present their progress during weekly tutorials.
- Record feedback and learning progress using the individual tutorial feedback form.
All progress must be shared through Google Drive or Microsoft Teams. The final article must be converted into PDF format and submitted through Google Classroom, the e-portfolio blog and MyTIMeS (Turnitin) for a plagiarism check.
JOURNAL ARTICLE
As the final stage of the dissertation module, I adapted my dissertation into a concise journal article suitable for publication. Rather than summarising the entire dissertation, the article focused on one specific research objective, allowing for a more in-depth analysis of a particular aspect of the study. The journal article was prepared according to the KREATE Journal submission guidelines, requiring the content to be condensed into a structured academic paper while maintaining clarity, coherence, and academic rigour.
The article, titled "An Analysis of Design Elements for Balancing Aesthetic Appeal and Meaningful Communication in Campaign Design," focused on analysing the survey findings related to the design elements that contribute to effective campaign communication. Using the data collected through the questionnaire, the article examined how elements such as imagery, colour, typography, layout, and message clarity influence audience perceptions of both aesthetic appeal and meaningful communication. Unlike the dissertation, which explored the research comprehensively, the journal article provided a focused discussion centred on a single research question and its findings.
Writing the journal article required me to adapt my academic writing style by presenting the research more concisely while retaining the key findings and critical analysis. I also redesigned the conceptual framework and selected only the most relevant figures and discussions to align with the narrower scope of the paper. This process allowed me to experience how academic research is transformed into a publishable article, reinforcing the importance of clarity, focus, and effective scholarly communication.
FEEDBACK
Throughout the development of the journal article, I received feedback that helped me better understand the purpose and expectations of academic journal writing. Initially, I approached the task as a condensed version of my dissertation. However, through discussions with my lecturer, I realised that a journal article is not simply a summary of the entire dissertation. Instead, it should focus on one specific research question or objective and provide a more in-depth analysis of that particular aspect of the research.
Based on this feedback, I refined the scope of my article to focus on the research question examining the design elements that balance aesthetic appeal with meaningful communication in campaign design. Rather than including all sections and findings from the dissertation, I selected only the survey data, analysis, and discussions that were directly relevant to this research question. This also required me to redesign the conceptual framework, restructure the discussion, and ensure that every section of the article supported the chosen research focus.
The feedback also emphasised writing in the style of a publishable journal article by presenting the research in a concise, focused, and analytical manner. These revisions resulted in a paper with a much clearer direction and demonstrated how a journal article should expand upon a specific aspect of a larger research study rather than summarise it in its entirety.
REFLECTION
ExperienceTransforming my dissertation into a journal article was a valuable learning experience that introduced me to a different style of academic writing. Unlike writing the dissertation, which explored the research comprehensively, developing the journal article required me to rethink how the research could be presented in a more focused and concise format. It challenged me to identify the most significant findings related to a single research question and communicate them within the structure and requirements of an academic journal.
Throughout this process, I observed that writing a journal article requires a different approach from writing a dissertation. Rather than including every aspect of the research, it is important to narrow the focus and provide a deeper analysis of one specific area. I also realised that selecting only the most relevant data, restructuring the discussion, and refining the conceptual framework helped create a clearer and more coherent paper. Working within the KREATE Journal guidelines also highlighted the importance of concise writing and presenting research in a format suitable for publication.
Developing the journal article strengthened my ability to adapt academic research for different purposes and audiences. I gained a better understanding of scholarly publishing and learned how to transform a larger research project into a focused article centred on a specific research question. Overall, this experience improved my academic writing, analytical thinking, and ability to communicate research findings effectively while preparing me for future opportunities in academic publication.
